A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Bizarre World of Home Internet Business Entrepreneurs

“Where are you currently employed?”

“The celestial body of Earth.”

Ever heard this before? You haven’t? Weird that it doesn’t ring a bell. There are numerous people making a living with a home internet business, but keep in mind two critical points for your own home office.

First off the size of your physical office is going to be extremely small and exceedingly lonely as you may have read in the previous “hermit” articles I wrote.

Second thing to know is oddly your cyber office will be gigantic and filled with lots of people from far flung lands who will for the most part attempt to sell stuff amongst themselves. This thing we call Planet Earth is actually an office shared by the world,  not just home internet business office.

As an example, can you wrap your head around the idea that through the Internet the forecast for local weather in Sydney comes from a person in Ukraine but is blasted all the way to Chicago? You can forget about going outside for the weather forecast.

One of my many clients is based in the UK and he runs a website that has ceramic & ball bearings for sale to just about any country… unfortunately the UK is not one of those countries. I would think there would no longer be a need for your neighborhood hardware store.

Having to deal with such a clutter of clients in my personal little office has made me come up with methods for relieving stress.

The Politics of a World Office

Due to my widespread client base I must face the challenging issue of different time-zones when trying to connect with them. (Thanks to Columbus’s travels I and many others must now deal with this obnoxious obstacle!)

Furthermore the majority of my clientele does not speak English nor are their websites written in my native tongue. Ever tried to pronounce netzwerk überwachung & netzwerküberwachung? My main business is implementing search engine optimization strategies for my clients, in the languages – English, Spanish, French and German – a testament to the nature of this world office that my clients inhabit.

However, language is only one of the many issues confronting global office dwellers. Much of the planet uses the metric system but a great deal of the Internet demographic is also using the imperial system, making the paltry amount of bathrooms a mere afterthought. The battle of describing the difference between a mile and a kilometer begins.

Spelling jokes abound as what is normal to one is hilarious to another. Do you have to protect your honour or do you prefer honor? Choose between center and centre. Should I call some folks or my peeps?

Thankfully, I reside in Canada. Just about all of us Canadians are super close to the border of the US. (Canadians are known as folks if you were wondering.) In school we are taught the British way of spelling and counting (unfortunately the Brits never refer to themselves as peeps). Regardless of our dismay plenty of American sayings land in our country probably because the immigration department is not placing enough snarling dogs at the porous border. I have a clue about this mile thing, due to the amount of inches I give out.

What to do when it comes to currency? To simplify is the key. As most know dollars from the good old US of A is the main Internet currency. In addition Paypal has become my friend because regardless of the type of currency put in I always receive crisp Canadian dollars.

Maybe you are still not convinced, I suggest thinking about time zones. Unfortunately an Australian client is rolling out of bed while a US based client is drifting off to sleep. What is a possible way these two clients can get a hold of you if you left your office? Turn to email to phone for remedy of that issue. Too bad that insomnia is a possibility as well.

Looking two decades back who could conjure up the concept of earning a livelihood from your house by staring at a screen and banging away on a keyboard. Thanks for visiting Planet Earth, otherwise known as my office.
